Michigan State Police Lakeview trooper involved in fatal crash

IONIA TOWNSHIP — A Michigan State Police Lakeview Post trooper was involved in a fatal crash Tuesday morning in Ionia Township.
According to the Ionia Post, an off-duty male trooper from the Lakeview Post was driving a vehicle northbound on Stage Road just north of Stone Road at about 11:30 a.m. when the vehicle collided with two teenage boys who were pushing a moped on the east side of the northbound lane.
Zachary Barber 16, of Ionia, was airlifted to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, where he was pronounced dead. Donald Proctor, 14, of Ionia, was transported by Life Ambulance to Spectrum Health.
The trooper was not injured in the crash. He will be placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation. The Ionia County Sheriff’s Department is assisting in the investigation.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash. The trooper’s name is not being released at this time.
“It was a terribly unfortunate accident,” said Lakeview Post Commander Andrea Nerbonne, declining to comment further.
Additional assistance at the accident scene was provided by Ionia Public Safety-First Responders, Life EMS, Aeromed and Reed and Hoppes Towing.
