SIX LAKES — Kimberly “Kimmy” Green is a professional at cutting hair. She’s also quite generous in cutting deals. From Aug. 29 to Sept. 17, her Haircuts Plus salon is offering $1 haircuts to any K-12 students.
The first-year business owner is offering the $1 haircuts as a fundraiser to help her local elementary school and offer families in need a chance to send their children school looking good.
“I know a lot of families that can’t afford much,” said Green, a 15-year resident of Six Lakes and originally from Hartland. “I wanted to do something for the kids and I thought I could offer affordable haircuts so they can go to school looking good and be ready for school portraits.”
Green said all profits made from the back-to-school deal will be donated to Montabella Community Schools’ elementary district.
“I’ll either present them with a check or go and buy supplies they need,” Green said.
Though Montabella Community Schools provides all the materials needed to its students, any donations of supplies or funding is well received, Montabella Elementary School Principal Shelly Millis said.
“The more support we get for our district  the more it helps us in additional ways,” she said. “Our schools are in need of a lot of stuff so anything helps. The more support we receive for the basics, like supplies, it saves us money to get additional materials, like educational games.”
Montabella Elementary expects to enroll about 450 students between kindergarten and sixth grade this year, according to Millis.
The $1 haircuts are for any K-12 students, not just those at Montabella, Green said.
“I got the word out through the (Edmore) Potato Festival and I’m hoping that brings in a lot of students here and outside of the area,” Green said.
Cutting young children’s hair can be challenging but, Green said, it’s usually fine and, in this case, will be more rewarding.
“I’ve been cutting hair for more than 20 years so I know that you just move with the kids who are fussy,” Green laughed. “Sometimes I let them hold the hair clips or a squirt bottle to distract them. You just got to go with it.”
Haircuts Plus is at 102 E. Bridge St. Call (989) 365-3525 for more information or to make an appointment.
Open hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
