GOWEN - The Greenville Yellow Jackets run through the O-K White Conference will toughen up with its next round today.
On Tuesday, the host Yellow Jackets won handily over league rival Grand Rapids Christian at The Links of Bowen Lake. Greenville shot 173 to the Eagles’ 202.
Britta Bernth was the match medalist with a nine hole score of 41. Jessica Bohner fired a 42 while Jessica Meloche and Tori Sanders each shot 45. Lauryn Day shot 46 and Megan Hallman a 47.
Megan Hoekzema led the Eagles with a 46.
“They are all in their mid-40s at this point. I think the scores are coming down,” Greenville coach Nancy Johnson said. “A win is a win. This solidifies our quest to hang on to the O-K White Conference championship.”
Greenville is looking for a 10th straight league title this season. The road to that title will toughen up today at Thousand Oaks against up and coming East Grand Rapids.
The Yellow Jackets are currently rated No. 2 in Division 2 by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association. The Pioneers are rated No. 7 in Division 3.
“They are determined to try and win. They would love for that to happen,” Johnson said.
The Pioneers have been improving as a program the past couple of seasons. They were within ten shots of Greenville at the preconference tournament on Aug. 24.
“Today will be a big match. We are not going to take East Grand Rapids lightly,” Johnson said. “We have to play well and make sure that we manage the golf course well. If we can do that, then I don’t have anything to worry about.”
The Yellow Jackets will play their fourth consecutive day Thursday when they host 10 teams at the Greenville Invitational at The Links of Bowen Lake.
The O-K White postconference tournament is Monday.
