GREENVILLE – William T. Ham was honored for his “unlimited kindness” he shares with the community Thursday night.
The 2012 Fred & Lena Meijer Spirit of Caring Award recipient was announced at a Celebration of Caring Dinner, which was hosted by the Spectrum Health United Memorial Foundation at the Winter Inn.
“I am overwhelmed, excited and grateful,” Ham said after the announcement.
The award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a remarkable and dedicated commitment to improving the quality of life for the people in our community now and for future generations, Foundation Chairman Dr. Rocky Hansen said.
The 2011 award recipient, Dr. Roger Coles, had nothing but good things to say of Ham before the announcement.
“(Ham) is a person of unlimited kindness that has been dedicated to the community for decades,” Coles said. “I look forward to the charity ball to thank (Ham) publicly for his numerous acts of goodwill.”
Ham has been married to Peggy for 38 years. They have a son, Bill and his wife Karen with grandchild Alex in Rockford, and daughter, Allyson with husband Matt Fazzi in Denver.
Ham, a Michigan Technological University graduate, owned Greenville Printing Co. with his partner Don Gibbs for more than 32 years. He has served on various local boards and committees throughout the years.
Ham currently serves on the Spectrum Health United Memorial Foundation Board as past chairman of the grants committee, on the executive committee as the liaison from the hospital board for United/Kelsey and as acting chairman of the finance committee. He also serves on the Greenville Area Community Foundation Board as development chairman and is a Montcalm Community College Foundation Board member.
The 2012 Many Hearts One Mission Charity Ball will be held on Feb. 11 at the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. The formal affair will include the presentation of the Fred and Lena Meijer Spirit of Caring Award, dinner and dancing. Terrance and Carolyn Slocum have been selected as the 2012 Honorary Co-Chairpersons of the event.
During the announcement dinner, Spectrum Health United Memorial Hospital Interim President Tina Freese-Decker commented on the construction and renovations plans that will be begin in October.
She said funds raised from the charity ball will go toward the new cardiology center at the hospital and thanked everyone for their support.
Speakers also took a few minutes to remember the 2007 Spirit of Caring Award recipient Blanche Ash and the kindness she shared in our community.
“She will be missed,” Coles said.
