Metron coat collection running one more week

BELDING — There’s still one week left to help make someone a little bit warmer this winter.
The Metron of Belding third annual coat drive wraps up on Friday.
According to Life Enrichment Director Sherri Nichoson, this year’s collection of gently-used items began on Labor Day. Collection boxes were placed at the main office and north entrance doors at Metron, where items can be dropped off anytime.
The idea of a coat drive came late in the fall of 2009, leaving a small team of nurses and administrators at Metron scrambling to collect winter wear and get it distributed before the cold weather came.
“We collected about 75 items the first year,” Nichoson said. “We served about 15 families and had only a few items left.”
The need continued to increase last year, so Metron of Belding teamed with Metron of Greenville to collect nonperishable food items and winter wear to give to local food pantries.
With the threat of a pie in the face for the losing facility, more than 2,000 food items were collected and more than 200 people received a new coat to keep them warm.
This year, after the collection ends, Metron of Belding will distribute all donated winter items at its building from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 6 and 7.
“We have a kind, caring community and they have been instrumental in making our efforts a success,” Nichoson said. “We just want to give back.”
