ROCHESTER – The Greenville Yellow Jacket girl golfers are in sixth place after round one of the Division 2 state golf finals.

In wet and windy conditions, the Yellow Jackets shot 359 at Katke-Cousins Golf Course in Rochester on Friday. Two-time defending state champion Muskegon Mona Shores sits in first place a score of 328.

Birmingham Seaholm is second at 338 followed by Birmingham Marian 346, Battle Creek Lakeview 351 and Farmington Hills Mercy 357.

“Scores for us were a little higher than we hoped,” Greenville coach Nancy Johnson said. “The entire field had scores higher than we are used to playing. The rain wasn’t too bad, but the wind was brutal.”

Britta Bernth led the Yellow Jackets with a round of 86. Jessica Meloche shot 87, Jessica Bohner 90, Lauryn Day 96 and Tori Sanders a 99.

“We just need to adjust,” Johnson said. “We have a good attitude and we’re not that far from catching up on a couple of teams ahead of us.”

The tournament individual leader is Elle Nichols of Okemos with a 77. Kristyn Crippen of East Lansing was second with a 78 and Macy Hudson of Birmingham Marian was third with 79.

The Yellow Jackets finished sixth after day one a year ago, as well. They were the second best team on day two to finish fourth overall at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing.

“We are out there, but anything can happen,” Johnson said. “We are optimistic and ready to tee the ball up. The wind will be there again so we will have to deal with that.”
