A drunken man skirting Prohibition laws in effect 85 years ago during Lakeview’s homecoming celebration ended with the first police line-of-duty death in Montcalm County and the area’s first female sheriff. Sheriff Franklin B. Henkel died 85 years ago today from a pair of gunshot wounds after he tried to stop Edgar Arnett, 20 at the time, from driving home drunk from downtown Lakeview.

Elections in Greenville will be more confusing next year under a redistricting plan that splits a handful of voters in each of the city’s four voting precincts.
Updated information given to Montcalm County Clerk Kristen Millard shows as few as three voters in some precincts will require a separate ballot beginning with the August 2012 primary election.

The remaining assets of the Stanley and Blanche Ash Foundation will be split among two local foundations over the next 60 days or less.
The Ash Foundation, which has contributed millions of dollars to local causes, will be divided and given as endowments to the Greenville Area Community Foundation and Montcalm Community College Foundation.
