STANTON - The Montcalm County Board of Commissioners recognized Virginia Wood on her retirement from the Ionia-Montcalm Department of Human Services (DHS) Board after 42 years of service.
Wood was appointed by Gov. William Milliken in 1969. She was elected vice chairwoman two months after she started and eventually took over as longtime chairwoman.

District 4 Commissioner John Johansen read a letter Monday commending Wood’s service.

“I feel very honored and humbled,” Wood said. “Things have changed a lot in the past 42 years.”
