BLANCHARD — Montabella’s football team was 8-1, but Travis Dunn wasn’t expecting the team to do so well.
However, the Mustangs will face Burton Bendle Saturday in the first round of the Division 7 football playoffs.
Dunn did expect to make the playoffs, just not with a school record eight wins.
“Personally no, I didn’t think we’d be 8-1,” Dunn said. “I thought we’d be in the playoffs for sure. It’s been a great season for us.”
It’s been a good season for Dunn, too. He’s the leading tackler on Montabella’s team with 112. No other Mustang has more than 90.
“In my personal play, I think the season has gone really good for me,” Dunn said. “It’s opened up some opportunities for me, I’ve been put in a good position by my defensive linemen to do what I need to do.”
Dunn said he’s put in a lot of work to get to where he is.
“Starting from last year at the end of the season, the next week a started weightlifting, every three days a week, and going to the summer camps,” he said.
Dunn said he is stronger than he was last year.
“I’ve improved by getting stronger,” he said. “That’s one of the biggest things.”
Dunn thinks he has an idea on how to stop Bendle Saturday.
“I think our run defense can stop their run, but we can’t give up big plays, because that’s how they score a lot,” he said. “It’s just big plays down the field passing.”
