Belding’s Rachel Hunt gets ready to return a serve during a match at home this season. Districts begin on Monday at Tri County.

The high school district volleyball tournaments start on Monday for most of the local teams. For Belding, Lakeview and Central Montcalm they go to Tri County for their Class B district tournament.

The first games will be Monday when the host Vikings play Central Montcalm in the first match, followed by Belding against Sparta in the second match.

The winner of Tri County-Central Montcalm will play Chippewa Hills in the first match on Wednesday, while Lakeview plays the winner of Sparta-Belding in the second match. The championship game is on Friday.

When the coaches of  three local teams were polled, each said they had to have their teams play their game.

“I think just play the way we know how to,” Belding coach Mikayla Linebaugh said. “It’s always a little nerve-wracking in districts. You just have to get rid of the nerves and play the game.”

“We are going to have to work hard and play our game,” Lakeview coach Tammy Dey said. “Our defense and serve recieve will have to be tough. We have been working really hard to improve and be ready to play our game.”

“I think that in order for us to win the district we need to have confidence and pass the ball,” Central Montcalm coach Haley Dawe said.

All three agree this is a difficult bracket to get through.

“I feel like the bracket will be tough,” Dey said. “Sparta and Belding are both good teams and it really could be anyone’s bracket and the finals will be tough.”

“It’s going to not be a breeze,” Linebaugh said. “Sparta’s in our league and they had a really good day in the conference tournament. Lakeview is a good team. It’s doable but we have to be on our game at the same time.”

“We have seen most of the teams that we will be playing and I think we have a shot of making it to the finals and winning, but it will not be an easy road,” Dawe said. “The other teams in our district are good teams, and it will be toughcompetition. We’re looking forward to a good week of volleyball.”

The winner of the district will head to regional play at Central Montcalm against the winner of the Reed City district in the second match Nov. 8.

Other local teams in district play include Greenville at the Class A Rockford district and Carson City-Crystal hosting the Class C district that also contains Montabella and Vestaburg.
