MONTCALM TOWNSHIP — Montcalm Township residents get a chance to decide on whether to recall their treasurer on Tuesday.
Bob Lewis, a former Montcalm Township supervisor, sought the recall due to Shilling’s alleged misconduct in office and inability to perform her duties adequately.
On Aug. 5, Lewis turned in 469 signatures on a petition seeking to recall Shilling. Montcalm County Clerk’s office only needed 273 verified signatures for it to be on the ballot.
Lewis said in the past seven years, nothing has been done to the roads because the township is spending too much money correcting Shilling’s mistakes.
Recently, the township paid for an audit to be performed by the Michigan Department of Treasury. This could cost the township over $7,000.
Lewis said Shilling has had people to help her correct problems that were raised in the past, including current Township Supervisor Michael Adams, who is also an accounting professor at Montcalm Community College.
“(Shilling) is not interested in anyone’s help,” Lewis said.
Shilling did not return several messages seeking comment.
