STANTON — Montcalm County Animal Control may have a kennel assistant and a census taker in the near future.
The Montcalm County Board of Commissioners Law Enforcement & Courts Committee voted Monday to recommend hiring a kennel assistant for 10 hours per week at $10 per hour, as well as the hiring of a census taker.
Controller-Administrator Chris Hyzer said historically there’s a good chance the funds raised through the census taker would fund the positions.
Jeanne Urbanski of Coral likes the idea of hiring a census taker and wants to take the idea one step further. She proposed anyone found with an unlicensed animal have the fine waived if they spay or neuter that animal.
“If we get these animals spayed or neutered, we’re going to have less animals running around in the streets,” Urbanski said.
Patricia Lentz’s position as director of Animal Control was eliminated by the Board of Commissioners on Sept. 26 as part of $1.3 million in budget cuts. Officer Angie Sova is currently in charge of the Animal Control office.
