GREENVILLE — The Greenville Public Schools Board of Education received a recommendation from the policy committee to name the new stadium.
The Greenville High School student council, athletic department and administration received more than 180 submissions for names of the new football stadium and athletic complex.
In a letter to the board, the student council stated there were an overwhelming amount of submissions to name the field after the longtime athletic trainer Jeff Day.
But because there are many people who could be recognized when naming the field, the committee decided to go a different route.
The council presented four names in order of preference to the board.
The names include Legacy Field, Alumni Field, Stinger Stadium and Heritage Field.
The committee did not want to focus on one person leaving others out and upsetting people.
“We looked at all aspects,” said Anna Ralph, student council president. “There were many people in the community that could be honored.”
High School Principal Jeff Wright said they are looking into a trophy case that will honor all the people at the stadium, which can also be added to over time.
The committee wanted a name that stood the test of time, Wright said. A name that might be important to people today may not be 50 to 75 years from now.
However, the student council has recommended naming the whole athletic complex the Jeff Day Athletic Complex.
“He has served all sports at GPS and it is felt that he needs to be recognized,” the letter stated. “And with the construction and renovations occurring, there is not a better time to honor him and his services.”
Board President Janet Ralph said she feels the committee made a wise decision when picking a name.
The board will officially vote on the name at the Dec. 12 meeting.
