CARSON CITY – The Montabella Mustangs volleyball team saw their season come to an end Thursday night.
The Mustangs lost to the Ithaca Yellowjackets 25-15, 25-7, 25-11 in the Class C District No. 83 semifinal at Carson City-Crystal. After a quick start the Mustangs struggled most of the night.
Montabella was tied with Ithaca at 4-4 and trailed just 16-13 before the Yellowjackets closed out game one with a 9-2 run.
“The girls did not play well at all,” Montabella coach Corrin Simon said. “There was no communication or aggressiveness.”
In game two, the Yellowjackets jumped out to a 7-0 lead and cruised from there. They led 15-5 and finished with a 10-2 run.
“We struggle with confidence sometimes,” Simon said. “We play well for a little bit, but once we make a couple of mistakes we fall apart.”
Montabella led game three early, 4-1. Ithaca turned it around and found themselves up 10-7 before wrapping the game up with a 15-4 run.
“We started a little slow tonight,” Ithaca coach Buffy Barnaby said. “We can of pulled it together, but we still made to many mistakes.”
The Yellowjackets were led by Jessica Wenzel with 11 digs and five kills. Taylor Bovee had 13 assists while Taylor Koren added five assists. Louise Vanderploeg had five kills.
Montabella was led by Andrea Dunn with 15 digs. Kayla Lacroix had 12 assists, Allie Ball six kills and Danielle Austhof had two blocks.
Ithaca improve to 21-24-4 overall. Montabella finished its season at 5-30.
“We didn’t end our season the way we would have liked, but we are looking toward next year to grow and improve,” Simon said.
Beal City defeated Carson City-Crystal in the other semifinal match Thursday. Ithaca will face Beal City tonight at 7 p.m.
