STANTON – It’s been a while since Central Montcalm coach John Kearney has coached a team. But he said he’s back in the swing of things.
“I had to dig out a lot of things and remember some stuff from 13 years ago,” he said. “It’s exciting.”
Kearney is embarking on a new season as the Green Hornets get ready for the 2011-2012 campaign.
“A great group of young men here, we had a great summer and they worked really hard this fall and preseason with conditioning and weightlifting,” Kearney said. “So I’m really excited.”
Wednesday was the third day of practicing for Central, and it was also the day that cuts would be made to the JV and varsity teams. So far things have been going well, according to Kearney.
“The kids have really worked hard, they’ve paid attention, they’re into details,” he said. “They get where they need to go and they pick that up pretty quick.”
Kearney is taking over for Shad Morgan, who left the basketball program to coach cross country in the fall. So the players from last year’s team have had to learn a completely new offensive and defensive scheme.
“We had a good summer,” Kearney said. “We just put one offense in, a tough one to see their basketball skills and their knowledge. They worked very hard. I always say ‘If you have questions, ask,’ and they’ve been very good about that, making sure they understand everything.”
Kearney expects to have a “pretty exciting team,” he said.
“Our summer ball was very good, very competitive,” he said. “I think with the guys we have on the team, they’re all interchangeable, so we’re going to be able to play everybody. If you’re not having a good night, someone else will be there to take your spot. I think we’ll do really good. The kids are excited, and that’s the important part.”
If everyone is going to play, then does Kearney have a deep team?
“The kids that were on varsity last year and the juniors who are up from the JV team have been doing the weightlifting and the conditioning. They know they’re going to have to run the floor, so they know what is going to be expected of them and they’ve worked very hard at it.”
