O-K Conference votes to realign

Five times is a charm.

That’s how many times it took O-K Conference principals to agree on a realignment proposal.

Voting for the second time on Wednesday, conference principals passed – by a 38-12 margin – a proposal to realign for the 2012-2013 athletic seasons. It was actually the same proposal that was turned down in the third vote on Sept. 27.

The realignment still has to be passed by each school board to become official, but that is expected to be a formality.

Realignment was necessary with the conference addition of NorthPointe Christian next year. The conference will expand from seven to eight divisions. Of which, six will feature six teams, one with seven and one with eight teams.

The Greenville Yellow Jackets will leave the White division and begin play in the new Bronze division while the Belding Redskins remain in the Blue division.

“We are looking forward to the new alignment,” Greenville High School Principal Jeff Wright said. “There will be great matchups for us and we get to create new rivalries. We get to hang on to Northview, which is a great rivalry for us.”

In addition to Greenville and Northview, the O-K Bronze will consist of Cedar Springs, Forest Hills Eastern, Forest Hills Northern and Grand Rapids West Catholic.

Entering the O-K Blue will be Allendale, Grand Rapids Creston, Wyoming Park and Wyoming Rogers. Current members Belding, Comstock Park, Coopersville and Sparta will complete the eight team division.

“The new Blue division is a combination of teams we have played in past years, with the exception of Creston,” Belding athletic director Joel Wilker said. “We look forward to re-establishing relations with some of those schools and continuing them with the schools that stayed in the Blue.”

The first proposal on Wednesday was voted down 36-14. In that proposal, Greenville would have been in the Bronze with Cedar Springs, Forest Hills Eastern. Forest Hills Northern and Kenowa Hills. The Blue division was the same in both proposals.
