Candidates line up for Montcalm County treasurer

STANTON — The slate of candidates for a pair of local treasurer positions is set.
Seven people have applied to become the next Montcalm County Treasurer.
Their names will not be revealed until a three-member committee of County Clerk Kristen Millard, County Prosecutor Andrea Krause and Probate Judge Charles Simon III meet on Thursday to review the applications.
“We have a very diversified slate of candidates with vastly different work experiences,” Millard said. “I am very encouraged by the candidates we have to select from and look forward to the interview process.”
Whoever is selected will be hired to fill the remainder of current Treasurer Marcia Sawdy’s term until Dec. 31, 2012, and would need to run for a new four-year term in the November 2012 election.
Sawdy is retiring effective Dec. 31 after working 15 years as treasurer.
Only one woman’s name will be on the ballot in February’s special election for Montcalm Township treasurer.
The township Republican party nominated Rosemary Hyde for the position. The township Democratic Party did not submit a candidate and nobody filed to run with no party affiliation.
Hyde will run unopposed on Feb. 28 unless write-in candidates seek the position.
Voters recalled former Township Treasurer Phyllis Shilling on Nov. 8 over concerns that she was not performing her duties adequately.
