LAKEVIEW— A Michigan State Police (MSP) Lakeview Post trooper has been arrested for allegedly hitting two pedestrians with his car near Ionia, killing one.
Trooper Daniel Parker was arraigned Tuesday in 64A District Court on misdemeanor charges of committing a traffic violation causing death and committing a traffic violation causing impairment.
He is free on $10,000 bond.
The accident occurred Aug. 30 on Stage Road in Ionia Township, just northeast of Ionia. Zachary Barber, 16, and Donald Proctor, 14, were pushing a moped along the east side of the road when Parker allegedly hit them.
AeroMed airlifted Barber to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he died later that day. An ambulance took Proctor to Butterworth for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.
Parker was off duty when the accident occurred.
“The MSP has a long-standing tradition of demanding the highest possible standards of professional conduct from its enforcement and civilian members,” a statement from the Lakeview Post says.
MSP troopers in Ionia investigated the accident and Ionia County Prosecutor Ronald Schafer’s office authorized the charges. Parker was placed on unpaid administrative leave when the charges were authorized and will remain on that status until the court case is concluded.
Parker enlisted with the state police in 2004. He was assigned to the Detroit Metro North Post before transferring to the Lakeview Post.
