LETTER: Snowmobiles a no go on Heartland Trail

By Daily News • Last Updated 9:36 pm on Friday, December 02, 2011

Dear Editor,
Recently, questions have been raised about the snowmobile barriers which are put in place on the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail during the winter season.

The trail is not closed for non motorized use now or during any season. It has taken 17 years of really hard work and millions of dollars to get this trail paved from Alma to Greenville. It can be ruined in a very short time by the use of snowmobiles. The cleats on these machines literally eat up the pavement.

This trail is an asset to outdoor enthusiasts and many communities in Montcalm and Gratiot counties. The board of directors of the Friends of Fred Meijer Heartland Trail (FFMHT) have a responsibility to protect it in any way that they can. It is the hope of this board that all those using the trail correctly will understand this and continue to use it for their enjoyment. Those using and/or living near the trail are the “eyes and ears” — please report to the police and any officer of (FFMHT) any illlegal use of this treasure.
