Crystal man sentenced for drunken motorcycle chase
Brice Hillard, 29, was sentenced in 8th Judicial Circuit Court to six months in the Montcalm County Jail and three years probation, plus fines and costs.
He previously pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated third offense, a felony with a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Montcalm County sheriff’s deputies observed Hillard on a motorcycle eastbound on Colby Road near Crystal traveling at a high rate of speed just after midnight on July 19.
After deputies conducted a U-turn in an attempt to catch up with the motorcycle, they saw it accelerating rapidly and weaving erratically from lane to lane. As deputies attempted to make a traffic stop, they watched Hillard lose control and crash into a ditch near Waterview Way.
Hillard sustained injuries and was taken to Carson City Hospital by Montcalm County Emergency Services. AeroMed later airlifted him to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Hillard had a blood alcohol content of 0.18, more than two times the legal limit of 0.08. He was wearing a helmet.
He has two similar driving convictions on his record — one in 2001 and one in 2004. The motorcycle accident was the third in just over a week in Montcalm County last summer.
