Mall office to close in Belding

BELDING — The Belding Chamber of Commerce will be closing its office inside the Covered Village Mall in downtown Belding.
The office was available for customers to pay bills, wire funds, ship packages, receive money orders, make copies and send faxes.
The Chamber took over control of the office from the mall association within the past 10 years as a favor to the mall association, according to Belding City Manager Randall DeBruine.
He said “the office is currently losing money due to changes in technology and other factors.” The main reason people pay their bills at the chamber office is due to approaching deadlines or the absence of a checking account.
“What these people will do now remains to be seen and is a concern, especially due to the financial circumstances of many people in town,” DeBruine said.
He said some of the functions performed at the office, such as money orders, copies and faxes, are provided by other businesses in town.
Belding Mayor Ron Gunderson said Belding Hardware on North Bridge Street will pick up all UPS duties formerly handled at the mall office.
Gunderson said there is at least one local business looking into taking over the bill-paying duties, but there is “no guarantee” that will happen.
