GRAND RAPIDS — The Greenville Yellow Jackets boys basketball team won its sixth straight game with a dominating second half performance.

The Yellow Jackets (6-0) used an 18-4 third quarter run to propel themselves to a 67-47 victory over Forest Hills Central (3-2) in the championship game of the Gold Division at the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament on Friday night.

“I thought defensively was the key early on in the second half,” Greenville coach Mark Haist said. “Greg Krusniak played big inside tonight and that initiated a lot of transition for us.”

Greenville led 23-20 at halftime. The Rangers opened the third quarter with with back-to-back three-pointers and an 8-2 run for a 28-25 advantage.

Chris Mickey scored eight of his game-high 22 points during the ensuing 18-4 run for a 45-32 lead.

After struggling to score in the first half the Yellow Jackets led 47-35 after three quarters.

“We were stagnant. We would catch and hold the ball instead of getting if moving like we wanted to,” Haist said of the first half offense. “It’s still a learning process. We don’t run a whole lot of zone so we don’t practice against it a lot.”

Adam Sharkey pulled the Rangers within nine points at 49-40 with a three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets quickly went on an 11-1 run to put the game out of reach at 60-41.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the glass outrebounding the Rangers 38-19.

“I thought our rebounding in the first quarter was exceptional,” Haist said. “I thought we gave up a few in the second. Our help side tonight was great. When we get those rotations we are in good rebounding position.”

Jonah Lakatos and Adam Dykema each scored 10 points to lead the Rangers, Austin Somerfield scored 20 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds for Greenville.

Torrey Davis and Aaron Crebessa each scored eight points. Krusniak and Mickey had six rebounds each.

Greenville plays Grand Rapids Creston at home on Jan. 6.
