VIDEO: Thomas defeats Dean, but Lowell wrestlers down Greenville

Greenville’s Jordan Thomas, right, tangles with Lowell’s Gabe Dean on Wednesday night at 215 pounds. Both wrestlers are state ranked, defending individual state champions and will wrestle in college.

GREENVILLE — The Lowell Red Arrows took the first step toward winning an O-K White Conference wrestling title in 2012.

The Red Arrows avenged last season’s loss by defeating the host Greenville Yellow Jackets 45-18 in a battle of top rated teams. According to michigangrappler.com the Red Arrows are rated No. 2 in Division 2 while the Yellow Jackets are No. 4 in Division 2.

The away team has won five consecutive matches while Greenville coach Paul Johnson and Lowell coach Dave Dean are now 5-5 in head-to-head matches.

While not as close as previous seasons the Yellow Jackets plan on using this loss as a learning experience as they look to improve and peak during the postseason.

One of the key points will be keeping matches going and not giving up extra points by getting pinned, which happened four times along with one void tonight.

“They won nine matches and got 45 points out of it. They averaged a tech fall per match,” Johnson said, “We won five matches and got 18 points. We had four decisions and one pin.

“They did a nice job of staying off their back where we didn’t. You can’t afford to get pinned and that has been the way we win,” he added.

The Red Arrows began the match by winning four straight to jump out to a 17-0 lead. Greenville’s Alec Ward (130 pounds) and Kyle Reamer (135) both earned consecutive decisions to pull Greenville within 17-6.

“Tonight, we couldn’t really get any momentum started. We started at a bad spot,” Johnson said. “We knew they had a real good three-pounder (103) and a real good one at 112. It was hard to stop the offensive juggernaut once it got going.”

The Red Arrows won four consecutive matches before Greenville’s Luke Gilmore earned an 8-5 decision over Jake Stehley at 171 to make the score 39-9.

“Lowell is awfully good,” Johnson said. “While we are a good team they are clearly better than us, at least tonight. I take nothing away from them.”

Greenville’s next win was also the biggest match of the night featuring reigning individual state champions Jordan Thomas of Greenville and Lowell’s Gabe Dean.

“He’s strong. He’s big and he has that football strength,” Thomas said. “He knows what he is doing and is a great wrestler.”

The two met at 215 pounds with Thomas scoring a 5-2 win. Tied at 1-1 in the third period Thomas scored the game-winning points with a takedown to take a 3-1 lead.

“I just wore him out. If I could get him tired, I thought I could take some good shots and get the win,” Thomas said. “During the regular season I try to wrestle the toughest kids at all times. That’s why we go to the tough tournaments to get ready for the postseason.”

“It was nice to see Jordan get the win in front of the home crowd,” Johnson said.

Greenville defeated Forest Hills Central in its second match 52-15.

Earning wins for the Yellow Jackets were Michael Schmidt (112), Tate Jeffery (119), Will Parmelee (130), Devon Lehman (140), Keaton Johnson (145), Austin Davis (152), Luke Gilmore (160), Jordan Thomas (189), Carter Magirl (215) and Nate Baker (103).

“That was a good win. They (FHC) had just won an 18-team tournament recently,” Johnson said. “Brad Anderson does a great job with them. He was a college roommate of Adam Hopkins (former Yellow Jacket and CMU wrestler). His kids get better every year.”

Lowell defeated Kenowa Hills 72-3 in their second match.

The Yellow Jackets are now 10-4 overall and head to the Grand Ledge Invitational on Saturday.
