On Monday I officially begin the job I have waited most of my professional life for — that as publisher of The Daily News and vice president of Stafford Media Solutions.
Growing up in Greenville as part of the third generation of a publishing family, I take great pride in carrying on the tradition of excellence started by my grandfather, Dale, and carried forward by my dad, John, and brother, Rob. Our focus always has been on providing advertisers with the best tools possible to spread the word about their businesses and to tell readers each day the story about what is happening in our area.
I was lucky enough to catch the journalism bug at a fairly early age. As a teenager — before the dawn of computers and graphic design — my first job at The Daily News was in our composing department building ads.
At that time, the job involved being creative by using border tape, art clipped from a special book and text printed off a copier. The whole project then was run through a little gadget that melted wax and allowed you to stick the ad to lined paper. Boy how times have changed.
I always knew writing was my passion, thanks in part to an inspiring English teacher at Greenville High School. But it wasn’t until I did a summer internship as a Daily News reporter after graduating from high school in 1985 that I decided to pursue a journalism and mass communication degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
My professional career has involved writing for the Boulder Daily Camera, several small weeklies in Colorado and many years as a freelancer.
While I’ve lived in Boulder longer than I did in Greenville, I’ve always known this was home. My dream was to move back here with my kids: 16-year-old Grace, 14-year-old Alec and 12-year-old Emma.
That dream became a reality this past week. My kids and I plan to make our home in Greenville and become an active part of the community.
As you know, newspapers in this day and age are charged with figuring out how to best connect with their advertisers and readers. The Stafford Media Solutions team is one of the most dedicated media families you will find and we are committed to top notch service and storytelling — both on paper and online.
Having spent my first 17 years here, there are a lot of faces I know and many more that I should. Feel free to contact with a question, concern or compliment about any of our products.
