GREENVILLE — Greenville girls basketball coach Eric Nichols is seeing a lot of good things from his Yellow Jackets in his first season.

Greenville used a lot of assists and rebounds to knock off the Muskegon Mona Shores Sailors 44-40 Tuesday night.

It all started with a first quarter where the Jackets (6-2) jumped out to an 11-5 lead on the Sailors (5-3).

“We had great ball movement,” Nichols said about the first quarter. “One of the things the girls have done is they shared the sugar. We took advantage of what they (Mona Shores) gave us with the ball movement.”

Greenville added a point to the lead in the second quarter, making the score 24-17 at the half. Mona Shores got that point back in the third quarter, setting up a close fourth.

“We made some plays down the stretch,” Nichols said. “We were 7-of-13 at the line. We hit some big ones under the three-minute mark.”

Mona Shores hurt themselves by going just 5-of-13 from the free-throw line.

“Mona Shores is a very good team,” Nichols said. “They’re one of the better teams in the O-K Green This is a very good win for these girls. It was a hard-fought contest.”

Leah Somerfield had a double-double for Greenville, scoring 11 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

“She (Somerfield) had a total of 13 defensive boards, so we had a lot of their (Mona Shores’) possessions of one-and-done,” Nichols said. “When you control the glass you control the flow of the game.”

But the ball distribution has Nichols very happy.

“I thought (Taylor) Baker and (Mackenzy) Nichols did a good job distributing the ball,” he said.

Jasmyn Walker led the Sailors with 12 points. Morgan Smith added eight.

The Yellow Jackets will get back into O-K White Conference play when they travel to Grand Rapids Christian to face the Eagles Friday night.

“We’re going to have to make sure we control their (Christian’s) guards,” Nichols said. “They have two guards that dictate tempo. We have to keep them under control. If we pound the glass we’ll take what the defense can give us.”
