CARSON CITY — The Carson City-Crystal Eagles wrestling team put on a good show in front of its home crowd for the final time this season.
With the postseason just a couple of weeks away the Eagles cruised to two victories on Tuesday night at home. The Eagles defeated Bath 45-31 in CMAC play and Pine River 51-27 in nonconference play.
With the help of three voids to start the match the Eagles jumped out to a 27-0 lead over Bath in their first match. Alex Baker (112 pounds) earned a pin while Kenneth Dittenber (119) earned a decision as well during that stretch.
The Eagles then opened a 39-3 advantage with wins by Lumen Groce (130) and Trevor Curler (135).
“I thought we wrestled OK. I thought we were a little flat,” Eagles coach Kacy Datema said of the first match. “They (Bath) scored 31 points on us. You can’t win too many duals when you allow 31 points.”
Bath responded with five wins in its final six matches including three consecutive pins to end the match.
“I knew we were tough down low and I new our kids would come through,” Datema said. “We talked about it. When you allow kids to hang around things happen. When you have the opportunity to score you have to do it.”
The second match against Pine River was also a win for the Eagles, but the win had a different feel.
“They had a little more fire and were ready to go,” Datema said.
The two teams traded pins to start with Dittenber pinning Lashawn Spencer in just 52 seconds to tie the match 6-6.
The Eagles reeled of three straight wins for a 21-6 lead. One win was pin by Garner Cusack. It was a great win after losing earlier in the night.
“I didn’t wrestle as good as I usually do. I wasn’t pumped up and I was tired,” Cusack said of his first match. “I thought about what I did wrong and in the next match I took more shots. I took him down quite a bit and then I pinned him.”
The Eagles opened up a 39-18 lead before the Bucks won two straight. The Eagles finished off the match with a pin by Willett and a win by void for Tyler Brillart.
“Eric Ward wrestled well tonight and has been having a good season,” Datema said. “Kenny Dittenber, Trevor Curler and Travis Willett wrestled well tonight.”
Ward, Baker, Dittenber, Curler and Willett each won two matches.
Pine River defeated Bath 52-21 in the third match of the night.
The Eagles improved to 14-8 overall and 3-2 in the league with the wins. They continue to prepare for the upcoming district tournament in February.
“We are trying to put together a district final run,” Datema said. “Our goal is to have a good solid lineup heading into districts.
The Eagles will face Kent City while Fulton will face St. Louis in the district tournament at Fulton.
Carson City-Crystal will travel to Leslie on Saturday.
