MEETING IN BRIEF: Vestaburg Schools

Name of board: Vestaburg Community School.
Meeting date: Jan. 9.
Reporting official: Recording Secretary Karen Grover.
Actions taken:
1. Elected Lynn Van Sickler as president, Ivan Palmer as vice president, Dave Freeman as treasurer and Bruce Keyes as secretary.
2. Approved the agenda with an amendment.
3. Approved minutes of the Dec. 12 meeting and executive session.
4. Approved the treasurer’s report and bills.
5. Approved the consent agenda, including the retirement of teacher Beverly Stratton and maternity leave of teacher Amanda Slezak.
6. Voted to amend bylaws and elections according to the new law of odd-year November elections.
7. Audra Kuhn of the Richland Township Planning Commission reported on a bike lane, which would connect the school to the Heartland Trail and Farmer in the Dell to help with safety issues. Kuhn asked the school board to approve the bike trail and to donate to the cause ($2,000 is currently needed). The board voted to approve the bike trail. The school will donate $1,000 from its activity account if local businesses will match the remaining amount.
Discussion items:
1. Jacqueline Gostomski thanked school board members for their service on behalf of the High School Student Council.
2. Superintendent Jeffrey Beal presented school board members with certificates and asked Doris Johnson from the media center to compile a list of books the media center can use in the high school in the name of school board members.
3. Montcalm Area Intermediate School District (MAISD) Associate Superintendent for Special Education Katie Flynn presented the special education millage proposal for Aug. 7. The MAISD wants to restore 1 mill and add another 1 mill. If the proposal passes, seven local school districts would receive $1 million in special education funds. The MAISD currently has a $1.7 million deficit.
4. The board will meet 5:30 p.m. Feb. 28 to evaluate the superintendent.
5. Larry Koutz was recognized as receiving Teacher of the Year from VFW District 9.
Members present: Vice President Ivan Palmer, Secretary Bruce Keyes, Treasurer Dave Freeman and trustees Mike Drumm, Tom McNerney and Dan Ryckman.
Members absent: President Lynn Van Sickler.
