Kurtis Perry

MONTCALM TOWNSHIP — Twenty-year-old Kurtis Perry will join the Montcalm Township Fire Department.

The department requested to hire Perry as a probationary firefighter during Wednesday night’s Montcalm Township Board meeting.

“I’m very excited,” said Fire Chief Cliff Dickinson of Perry joining the team.

Perry was studying fire science at Lake Superior State University, but due to an increase in tuition, he was unable to complete the program. He continued his education at Montcalm Community College, where he just finished studying to be an emergency medical technician. He said he is on his way to the national registry.

When Perry found out about the opening on the fire department, Dickinson said he took it upon himself to not only apply for the position, but to meet all the firefighters. Perry came into the department once a week to check on the status of the position as well.

“This showed me he was highly interested in the position,” Dickinson said of Perry, adding that this is a quality he looks for in candidates.

The Montcalm Township Fire Department is operated by volunteer firefighters. If the volunteers are not interested in fighting fires, no one will show up to fight fires.

Perry said he is excited about getting the position and the experience that is to come.
“I appreciate the opportunity,” Perry said. “I look forward to it.”

Although Perry has studied fire science, he will still have to go through training at the academy before being able to participate 100 percent at fire scenes.

Township Supervisor Michael Adams said he was encouraged by Perry and him wanting to follow his dreams.

The addition of Perry to the Montcalm Township Fire Department brings the total number of firefighters to 20, according to Dickinson.
