MOUNT PLEASANT — Two local men who graduated from Greenville and Lakeview have received a national award from Editor & Publisher Magazine.

Matt Erspamer, 21, and Ryan Nielsen, 23, produce Grand Central Magazine for Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, where they are both students.

Erspamer, a junior, is majoring in online journalism and minoring in political science and cinema studies. He graduated from Lakeview High School in 2009.

Nielsen, a senior, is majoring in photojournalism. He graduated from Greenville High School in 2006.

The young men recently won a national EPPY award for Best University Journalism Website, besting finalists from Berry College in Georgia, City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Journalism in New York, DePaul University in Illinois and Temple University in Pennsylvania.

The award was given by Editor & Publisher, a trade journal covering the international journalism industry.

Erspamer is editor in chief of Grand Central Magazine. He hopes to write for an online publication or work for a print magazine after college.

“I was obviously very honored to receive the award and it really did a lot to enhance our image on CMU’s campus,” Erspamer said. “I’m most proud of how consistent our progress is. It seems like we’re always taking steps to be a better magazine instead of staying stagnate.”

Nielsen is multimedia editor and webmaster for Grand Central Magazine. He plans to start his own photography business after college, specifically photographing bands and concerts.

“When I first heard that Grand Central had won the EPPY award, I was really excited about it,” Nielsen said. “After going to the website and seeing some of the winners in other categories, I was completely awestruck. Seeing our name next to the likes of Sports Illustrated, ESPN, CNN and The Associated Press made me realize how big of an honor it really was. Now we have a pretty decent reputation on campus and our web traffic is the highest that it has ever been, thanks to our hard-working and dedicated staff.”
