IONIA— Ionia County Undersheriff Dale Miller of Odessa Township has announced his candidacy for sheriff.
He seeks the Republican nomination in the Aug. 7 primary election and the Nov. 6 general election.
As the chief law enforcement officer of Ionia County, the sheriff enforces the laws of the state, supervises the deputy sheriffs, operates the county jail, provides security for the trial courts, enforces marine safety, maintains local criminal records and serves civil process.
Miller graduated from Lansing Waverly High School and Lansing Community College with an associate’s degree in business. He then graduated with his law enforcement degree from the 25th Mid-Michigan Police Academy in Lansing. He received additional law enforcement training at Michigan State University where he was certified in accident reconstruction. Further, Miller completed the Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command and he attended the 222nd FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.
Miller has more than 25 years of law enforcement and administrative experience with the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department. Prior to being appointed undersheriff, Miller served the citizens of Ionia County as a deputy sheriff, narcotics investigator, sergeant, lieutenant and detective lieutenant. As undersheriff, Miller secured state and federal grant funding to purchase electronic fingerprinting, in-car computers and a mobile records management system that allows the sheriff’s deputies to be more effective and efficient while on patrol.
“It is my desire to continue serving the citizens of Ionia County as your sheriff,” Miller stated in a press release. “My education, training and experience in law enforcement have prepared me for the responsibilities of sheriff. I am dedicated to providing the highest level of professional law enforcement leadership that the citizens of Ionia County expect and deserve.”
Miller is married to the former Nancy Beard of Lake Odessa and together they have four children and five grandchildren.
