CRYSTAL — A new tenant will be joining the family at the Crystal Community Center after the Crystal Township Board agreed to let Dr. Willis Gaffney rent a room in the facility on a six-month trial.
Gaffney attended Wednesday evening’s township board meeting and explained his plans for the rental. The primary physician has been in the Montcalm County area since 1991 and has been located at his office at 2939 S. Sheridan Road, just north of Sidney Road on M-66 since 1997.
Gaffney plans to open the clinic in the Crystal Community Center one day per week, giving local residents a chance to seek medical advice without traveling to Greenville or Carson City.
“We would be doing it on a shoestring budget,” Gaffney said. “Using only our existing budget, just in case it’s not successful.”
He said that if the weekly clinic is busy, it may expand to more at the end of the six-month trial.
The township board agreed to a six-month trial at the rate of $150 a month.
“We’ve been talking about bringing a doctor back to the area,” said Supervisor Charlie Braman. “I’m really excited about this.”
Gaffney would occupy the room currently used to store some Department of Public Works (DPW) equipment, since it already has a restroom facility in the room with a handicapped-accessible restroom across the hall.
Gaffney’s six-month contract starts May 1, although the board agreed to let Gaffney start the clinic early if moving in goes smoothly.
“Obviously it won’t be a full-time office with all the capabilities,” Gaffney said. “But if it’s something people could use, then we’d like to make it available.
Contact Gaffney’s office at (989) 831-9009 for more information on the weekly clinic.
