Photos released of purse thieves at Big Rapids Meijer

BIG RAPIDS — The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Feb. 28 theft of a purse at the Meijer Store in Big Rapids.

Surveillance camera footage shows the suspects as being a man and woman in their 50s.

The female has brown hair. The male is balding with light colored, possibly gray hair. The male also had his right arm in a sling. The suspects’ vehicle is described as being a full size pick-up truck with a possible extended cab, light colored.

Anyone able to identify the suspects in the photos is ask to contact the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office at (231) 592-0150.

After a few quick strikes to the ice on Baldwin Lake with his chisel Tuesday, avid ice fisherman Brandon Jones penetrated through the frozen surface into the water below without much effort. “That’s not safe,” Jones said staring down at the hole he had made in the thin sheet of ice. “And it’s not fair. This is January and it’s still not safe to be out here ice fishing.”

Multiple fire departments battled a blaze for at least five hours this morning in downtown Pierson. Randy and Denise Granger’s home at 321 Amy School Road just off Federal and Stanton roads was left in shambles after a fire raged through the 22-room old farmhouse.

‘Just call me Fred’: Meijer recalled for generosity, kindness

“Generosity” and “kindness” are two words that come to most people’s minds when thinking of Fred Meijer. People who knew Meijer reminisced about who he was as person after he died from a stroke on Friday. Public visitation will be from 2 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids Township. The family will have a private memorial service on Wednesday for invited guests only.
