GREENVILLE — The newest reporter at The Daily News is also one of the most experienced.
Mike Taylor has worked at newspapers in Big Rapids, Grand Rapids, Jenison, Lakeview, Rockford and the Detroit area. He also writes a monthly horoscope for several English-print newspapers in Russia, “although I don’t particularly believe in astrology or know anything about it,” he admits.
Taylor began working as a staff writer at The Daily News this week. He will primarily focus on feature writing. He moved from Detroit to Baldwin Lake when he accepted the job.
“I’m thrilled to be working at The Daily News, a paper I’ve read and admired for many years,” Taylor said.
“The standard for editorial excellence is a cut above so many papers being published these days. It’s a real treat to be on staff here. I’m happy for the chance to be writing in-depth feature articles, the sort that allow readers to see into the lives of some of the area’s most interesting individuals.”
Taylor has a girlfriend he affectionately calls “Sweet Annie.” He also has a daughter, Aubreii, who resides in Detroit, and a son, Jordan, who lives in San Antonio Texas, and two grandchildren, Edison and Rosie.
Taylor’s hobbies include riding his bicycle 10 to 30 miles per day, fishing with or without ice on the lake and playing in his blues and classic rock band, The Guinness Brothers.
“What we lack in talent, we make up for in volume,” Taylor joked.
The Daily News will be publishing Taylor’s humor column starting Thursday, when you can read about his adventures in moving from Detroit to Baldwin Lake. Those wanting to read more of Taylor’s humor can purchase his book, “Looking at the Pint Half Full.”
“Mike is an excellent storyteller and we’re thrilled to have his writing style as part of our newspaper’s mix,” Managing Editor Darrin Clark said. “Mike will be working closely with Features Editor Ryan Schlehuber to strengthen our feature projects such as Home and Free Time, but he’ll also bring the versatility to report news from throughout the area.”
