Greenville golfers looking for experience

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Yellow Jackets boys golf team returns just two players with varsity experience.

To say the least, the Yellow Jackets will be inexperienced and looking for growth from this year’s team.

“We will be a middle of the road team,” Greenville coach Tony Hoffman said. “We’ll have highs and lows, we’ll get beat, but we’ll do our share of winning too.”

Returning for the Yellow Jackets are senior Dylan Bernth and junior Brady McNeill. Gone are Chris Hedger and Quinn Putt.

“Dylan has been a varsity player the past two seasons and Brady for one season,” Hoffman said. “They should be our top scorers and they will be the ones helping out the new varsity players.”

Both returning golfers averaged near 44 and will be looking to shave their scores down to 40.

“We have a good group of guys and they should be a fun group to work with,” Hoffman said. “We will be looking to improve on keeping scores from getting out of hand. We will have to learn to minimize the damage.”

A year ago, the Yellow Jackets finished 8-7 overall. Hedger was a state qualifier, as well.

East Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Christian are the favorites in the O-K White this year.

“Our conference is usually a two-horse race with East Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Christian,” Hoffman said. “Northview, Lowell and Greenville will be battling for third, fourth and fifth.

“Northview and Lowell should be a pretty good matchup all year long. It’ll come down to which team can manage the course better on a given day,” he added.

The Yellow Jackets open up the season on April 10 at the Cedar Springs quadrangular and will host the Greenville Invitational on April 16.
