KENTWOOD — The Belding Redskins held their own on Saturday against Class A schools at the East Kentwood Invitational.
East Kentwood went 3-0 for the day. Lowell was 2-1 Belding 1-2 and Traverse City West 0-3.
The Redskins lost game one 1-0 to the Red Arrows. Morgan Groom — headed to Harvard to pitch — earned the win for the Red Arrows and had 18 strikeouts.
Kyleigh Linebaugh started the game and allowed two hits in four innings and no runs. Rachel Hunt took the loss in three innings of work. She allowed two hits with one earned run.
Mariah Heintzelman had the lone Redskins hit.
“We just weren’t discipline at the plate,” Belding coach Mikayla Linebaugh said. “She (Groom) has a good rise-ball and we just couldn’t hold up. That happens with a young team.”
Game two was another one run loss for the Redskins, as East Kentwood won 7-6.
Morgan Hill took the mound and the loss. She went all seven innings, allowing seven hits, two walks with six strikeouts.
Heintzelman had three hits and five RBIs to lead the Redskins. Kyleigh Linebaugh and Hill each had two hits. Mindy Reminga and Hunt each had one hit. Reminga had the other RBI for the Redskins.
“Our bats were a little slow to get going,” Linebaugh said. “We went from a pitcher throwing hard to a slower one and it took some time to adjust. Errors cost us the game against East Kentwood.”
Belding dominated the third game against Traverse City West with a 12-0 five inning win.
Kyleigh Linebaugh went all five inning, allowing three hits with six strikeouts.
Reminga had two hits and an RBI. Makayla Boss and Kaitlyn Lieffers each had two RBIs. Autumn Thome, Hannah Linebaugh, Heintzelman and Hill each had one RBI.
“We had two one run losses, which is not bad against bigger schools,” Linebaugh said. “I was a little frustrated with our bats for coming on a little to late.”
The Redskins are now 5-3 overall and will travel to Sparta for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
