IONIA — Curt Read is returning to Ionia and running for sheriff of Ionia County.

Read has served his country around the world. He is a retired colonel from the U.S. Army, served as a deputy sheriff and was most recently a federal special agent.  He will be residing on the family farm near Palo where he grew up.

Returning to Ionia, he now brings his leadership experience home. His training and experience in management and law enforcement qualifies him for the position of sheriff. His principles are why the citizens of Ionia will value him as sheriff. He lives by the old-fashioned values he was raised on, including integrity, honesty, fairness, dedication and open communication.

As sheriff of Ionia County, Read is committed to ensuring a safe and secure community. He has worked with Congress to effect change in laws and oversight, improving accountability. He has also written and published procedures for various security programs and investigated crimes with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

“The deputies and staff during the tenure of Sheriff Dwain Dennis have accomplished some remarkable things,” said Read.  “I have been honored to serve my country over the years. Now is the time to serve my community. I look forward to the campaign ahead so the voters can compare qualifications and elect their next sheriff.”

Read will pull the citizens together through education, awareness and community involvement to prevent crime. Read plans to visit as many people as he can door-to-door to understand and meet the most important needs of all citizens. He also plans to sit down with the deputies, office staff, business owners, community leaders and citizens of the county to seek ways to improve efficiency within the department.
