MUIR — A Muir man is being charged with 11 crimes related to child pornography.

Investigators from the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post’s Ionia detachment arrested James Hay, 53, at his home in Muir following a lengthy investigation.

Hay was arraigned Wednesday and charged with 10 counts of possession of child sexually abusive material and one count of using a computer to commit a crime. A preliminary examination is scheduled for May 23 in 64A District Court in Ionia.

The investigation began in the fall of 2011 and detectives were in contact with investigators from at least three other states. Computer evidence was seized from Hay’s home in December 2011.

Child sexually abusive material is defined as “any depiction …which is of a child or appears to include a child engaging in a listed sexual act.” Each count carries a possible maximum penalty of four years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

Using a computer to commit a crime carries a possible maximum of seven years and/or a $5,000 fine.

Hay remains in the Ionia County Jail in Ionia on a $50,000 bond.
