Dillon, Main, Baker take home top honors at Daily News Track Classic

The top athletes for the 2012 Daily News Track Classic were, left to right, Greenville’s Taylor Baker, Lakeview’s Joe Main and Lakeview’s Dillon Wood. All three placed first in four events and were voted top honors by participating coaches on Tuesday.

GREENVILLE — The sun was shining, but the wind was blowing.

The area’s top track athletes never let the wind phase them in the annual Daily News Track Classic on Tuesday evening at Yellow Jacket Stadium.

The Daily News Track Classic brought together the athletes with top times/measurements of the season for one final meet before the MHSAA state finals on Saturday.

Lakeview seniors Joe Main and Dillon Wood each placed first in four events, two of them together in the 400- and 800-meter relays. Their success earned them the Top Male Athlete Award for the event.

On the other side, Greenville junior Taylor Baker claimed the Top Female Athlete Award for her four first place finishes, as well.

Wood said The Daily News Track Classic is one of his favorite events of the year.

“Being a big elite meet there is more competition and faster times,” Wood said. “It’s just fun to go against the top competition. It gets you ready for the state meet.”

Lakeview’s Brad Root is upside down as he tires to clear a pole vault on Tuesday. Root placed second with a vault of 12-0.

In addition to the two relay firsts, Wood also won the long jump (21-7 1/2) and the 300 hurdles (42.70).

“Long jump has always been my favorite, but then they put me in the 4×100 and 4×200 relay,” Wood said. “We are going to state in both relays and the 4×200 is pretty fun. Our times could have been a little faster, but the wind in the face slowed us down.”

Main also won the 100 and 200 dashes.

Main defeated Greenville’s Carter Stephens by just one-hundredth of a second in the 100. Main finished with a time of 11.40 to Stephens’ 11.41. Main ran the 200 in 23.74, ahead of Greenville’s Von Brown (23.79).

“My best event was probably the 100,” Main said. “I ran a really good split and took first.”

Main will compete with Wood at the Division 3 state finals Saturday in both the 400 and 800 relays. He has enjoyed those two events this season.

“My favorite event this season has been the relays,” Main said. “We have been really successful in the 4×200. We have always focused on the other relays, but this year we put together a good 4×200 team.”

Baker claimed first in the 100 (12.69), 200 (26.71) and both the 800 and 1,600 relays.

“It went very well. It was an outstanding day,” Baker said. “The 800 relay and the 200 are my favorites. I just like the sprint in the 200

Belding’s Monica Baylis, middle, came from behind to win the 800-meter run on Tuesday at The Daily News Track Classic. Baylis finished in 2:30.18, ahead of Greenville’s Maddie Sorsen, right, and Greenville’s Stacey Fitzgerald, left.

and the relay I like the team effort. We always do really good in the 800.”

Baker edged out Cedar Springs Ally Hamilton by one-hundredth of a second just as Main did. Hamilton ran the 100 in 12.70.

Belding’s Trevor Curtis placed first in the 1,600 run. He said he was slower than normal, but said the wind has something to do with that, as he fended off a pair of runners from Cedar Springs.

“It was pretty tough,” Curtis said. “They were trailing me the entire time and I just didn’t want them to pass me. The wind was horrible in my face.”

The wind may have effected the pole vaulters the most. The end results, though, were mostly good.

Belding freshman Danielle Rode set a school record in the pole vault at 9-0, which was good for third in her final meet of the season.

“It made me run a little faster,” Rode said of the wind. “It felt good to get the school record. I’ve been wanting to do it all year long and finally did in the last meet.”

Greenville junior pole vaulter Jesse Muniz did not place, but did set a personal record with a vault of 11-6. He said the wind was tough to deal with.

“You have to change steps. You wouldn’t think it would do that, but it does,” Muniz said. “You don’t feel it in the air, but you have to watch your pole so the wind doesn’t blow it into the stick and knock it off.”

Greenville’s Audrey Wyse won the girls pole vault with 10-0 while Greenville’s Levi Helms topped the boys pole vault with 12-0.

Athletes from Greenville, Belding, Cedar Springs, Lakeview, Central Montcalm, Tri County, Carson City-Crystal and Vestaburg all participated in the annual event.
