Police arrest Greenville man for drugs, drunk driving, retail fraud

GREENVILLE – A Greenville man was arrested after allegedly committing a slew of crimes this weekend.

The Greenville Department of Public Safety responded to an accident at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of W. Washington Street.

Derrick Shaver, 18, was driving a vehicle he had taken from his mother without her consent or knowledge. The vehicle left the roadway and crashed through a fence. Shaver received minor injuries.

Officers noticed Shaver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and other indicators showed he had been drinking. Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services personnel attempted to treat Shaver, but he became agitated and began to physically resist treatment. Officers had to restrain Shaver after he began punching emergency personnel and officers.

Shaver was transported to Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville.

After further investigating, officers found Shaver had committed retail fraud at the Meijer in Greenville prior to the crash. He was also in possession of marijuana at the scene.

After being released from the hospital, Shaver was transported to the Montcalm County Jail in Stanton.

He has been charged with the following crimes:

• Unlawful driving away auto (felony)

• Resisting/assaulting/obstructing a police officer (felony)

• Possession of marijuana (misdemeanor)

• Retail fraud third degree (misdemeanor)

• Operating while intoxicated (misdemeanor)

• Operating a motor vehicle without a license (misdemeanor).

Shaver was arraigned and remains in the Montcalm County Jail.
