Central Montcalm’s LaShae Wright competing in second state track final

Central Montcalm track athlete LaShae Wright is making her second appearance in the Division 3 state finals today.

Central Montcalm’s LaShae Wright, right, clears a hurdle during Tuesday’s Daily News Track Classic in Greenville. Wright finished second to Lakeview’s Alex King, right. Both Wright and King qualified for today’s Division 3 state finals in the 100 hurdles.

Wright will be competing in the 100-meter hurdles today at Comstock Park. A year ago, she competed in the 4×100 relay and the 100 dash.

After not placing a year ago, Wright is hoping to place this year as a junior.

“I hoping to place at the state this year,” Wright said. “I keep getting faster as the year goes on. I hope to be able to lower my time again.”

Wright has already broken the school record in the 100 hurdles twice this year, once was her own record. Both records were within the past two weeks.

She ran a 15.10 at regionals and then ran a 14.91 at Tuesday’s Daily News Track Classic.

Wright’s 14.91 is the fourth fastest time of Division 3 state qualifiers.

In addition to the 100 hurdles, Wright competes in the high jump, 200 dash, 400 relay and 800 relay. She occasionally runs in the 300 hurdles, as well.

Of all the events she competes in it’s one she doesn’t run in — at least this year — that is her favorite.

“My favorite event has to be the 100-meter open, but I didn’t run that this year,” Wright said. “The 100 hurdles and the 100 dash are run back-to-back this year. It was too much to do back-to-back.”

Wright, who also participates in cheer and pom pom, likes the competition track provides.

“I like the competition,” Wright said. “The competition is really good and it is a challenge.”

On Tuesday, Wright placed first in the high jump (5-2), second in the 100 hurdles (14.91) and third in the 400 relay (53.84) and 800 relay (1:55.08).

At regionals, Wright placed second in the 100 hurdles (15.47) and seventh in the 200 dash (28.74).

Wright was first in the high jump (5-2) and third in the 100 hurdles (15.53) at the CSAA meet this year.
