Both the boys and girls Under-14 (U14) teams in the Lakeview AYSO Soccer Tournament last weekend had strong showings.
The girls U14 team won its division, going 3-0 in the tournament. The boys U14 team ended up second in its division with a 5-1 record.
The girls team was led by Danielle Grant, who played goalkeeper for the Lakeview varsity soccer team in the spring. She scored four goals and Tricia Beckett added two more in the tournament.
Coach Peggy Beckett said the reason the team did so well was the fact that they’ve played together for a long time.
“They’ve been playing together since the U8s. They’re a really tough group of girls.”
The girls’ biggest win was against Newaygo, which handed Lakeview its only two regular-season losses. Tricia Beckett scored the only goal of the game to get the win.
“The only tough competitor was Newaygo, who beat us in the regular season so if we squeaked by them I knew we could pull anything off,” Peggy Beckett said. “There were some very impressive shots the girls made against Newaygo.”
The boys team got four goals from Sam O’Dell and two more from Jacob Tanner in the tournament.
“I wasn’t too surprised. They are also a good group of boys,” Beckett said. “They pulled together as a team very well. They played very hard defense, they played very hard offense. The goalkeepers did a great job.”
The only loss in the tournament was to Grant, which was 6-0 and won the division. Lakeview lost 4-1.
“I think a lot of kids (on Grant’s team) were just a little bit older,” Beckett said. “We were outsized and they had a little bit more speed on us.”
The boys came close to having a scoreless draw against White Cloud but got some help in the end.
“We played White Cloud and we ran out of time but they fouled us and we scored on a penalty kick,” Beckett said.
Results from other divisions and teams were not available.
