STANTON — A Stanton man was sentenced to up to five years in prison last week for stealing a vehicle.

James Whitney, 30, was charged with unlawfully driving away an automobile (UDAA), leaving the scene of an accident and driving while license suspended. He pleaded guilty April 23 to UDAA and driving while license suspended.

Deputies from the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office arrested Whitney on April 6 after receiving a call at 5:07 a.m. about a property damage accident on Holland Lake Road near Wicker Road in Evergreen Township.

While investigating, deputies received information about a 2000 Chevrolet Prizm that was stolen from the 3600 block of Pine Trail Drive near the crash scene.

The owner of the vehicle involved in the crash stated he was not driving, but he did identify who the driver was.

Deputies were assisted by Michigan State Police troopers to follow up on the driver and locate the stolen vehicle.

Whitney was located, arrested and treated for minor injuries sustained from the crash.
He was sentenced Thursday in 8th Judicial Circuit Court to from 15 months to five years in prison.
