Howard City woman killed while lying in the road
REYNOLDS TOWNSHIP — A Howard City woman was killed after a car struck her while she was lying in the road early this morning.
According to Montcalm County Undersheriff Mark Bellinger, the accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on M-46 near Edgar Road just north of Howard City.
A westbound 1997 Buick LeSabre driven by a 56-year-old Edmore man struck a 19-year-old Howard City woman. Sheriff’s officials believe the woman was alive before she was struck.
Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies that the woman was lying partially in the roadway when the accident occurred. Another vehicle had narrowly missed striking the woman and had turned around to come back to check on the woman, but then the second vehicle struck her.
The driver whose car struck the woman had not been drinking and speed was not a factor in the accident. Bellinger said alcohol and/or drugs may have been a factor as to why the woman was lying in the road.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification.
Deputies continue to investigate the accident. Anyone who may have seen a pedestrian in the area of the M-46 truck stop around 5:30 a.m. is asked to call the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office at (989) 831-7590 or the tip line at (989) 831-7593.

While I can understand that you might not be able to fully assertain why the lady was laying in the road in the first place, it would still be a good idea to mention it. Was she in another accident prior to this one, and was sitting on the side of the road? Was she drunk and fell into the road while walking home? It would have been a good idea to mention the reason she was in the road in this story.
I understand everyone wants to know what happen, myself included. I would hate for any news organization to report reasons with zero proof or fact checking. This is fact reporting not the rumor mill. If you want speculation, made up facts or rumors feel free to watch it on TV.
Thank you to the Daily News staff for adding “Bellinger said alcohol and/or drugs may have been a factor as to why the woman was lying in the road.” This helps clear up some confusion as to what happened and answered one of the five “W”s in reporting. Thank you.
That would mean they would need to hire a reporter to cover the story. They don’t do that anymore. I agree, and miss, concise informative news reporting also.
