CARSON CITY — Collin Joseph Barnes, 21, of Carson City, was arrested Monday and charged with filing a false police report. The felony charge stems from a report filed by Barnes on Sunday.

According to Montcalm County Sheriff’s Det. Sgt. Thomas Goerge, Barnes told officers that his 2000 Ford pickup truck was stolen sometime after 3 p.m. Saturday.

The vehicle was placed into the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) as a stolen vehicle and police in neighboring jurisdictions were asked to keep an eye out for it.

On Monday morning, a passerby reported a vehicle in the ditch in the 9000 block of South Brown Road in Fairplains Township. Police determined the vehicle was Barnes’ truck, reported stolen the previous day. The truck was impounded and towed to the sheriff’s office for processing.

Police re-interviewed Barnes and discovered he had, in fact, crashed the vehicle himself and reported it stolen in order to avoid taking responsibility for the crash.

Barnes has been arraigned and is currently free on bond.
