PIERSON — Two out of three Pierson Village Council members survived a recall vote Tuesday — barely.
Rebecca Starr held onto her seat with a vote of 8-11, while Verna Smigiel also held onto her seat with a vote of 9-10. Duane Griffes, however, was recalled by a vote of 11-8.
President Karl Van Haren survived his own recall attempt — initiated by Starr — on May 8 by just three votes. Van Haren then initiated a recall against Starr, Smigiel and Griffes.
Starr attempted to resign from the village council on June 5. However, the council has not yet accepted her resignation due to the lack of a quorum. Two other council members have also resigned recently — Larry Atkin, who had just recently been appointed to the council, and Lucinda “Cindy” Keech.
Starr said Tuesday’s recall results don’t change anything for her.
“I do appreciate the support. I truly and sincerely do,” she said. “I just can’t deal with him (Van Haren). I just don’t have any fight left in me. I’m tired.”
Starr said a new work schedule is also preventing her from attending village council meetings.
Griffes and Smigiel could not be reached for comment.
