RICHLAND TOWSHIP – A 9-year-old girl from Vestaburg was seriously injured after a car struck her bicycle Wednesday night.

Montcalm County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a car versus bicycle personal injury accident at about 8:42 p.m.

A 64-year-old woman from Vestaburg was driving a 2012 Toyota Yaris eastbound on E. Kendaville Road, east of Douglas Road in Richland Township.

Through the investigation, deputies found the driver of the Toyota came over a hill and saw a young girl crossing the road to her driveway on a bicycle. The woman veered in an attempt to avoid striking the child while applying her brakes, but she was unable to avoid the accident.

The girl was seriously injured and taken to Alma Hospital by Montcalm County Emergency Services and later flown by medical helicopter to Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor, however the driver did submit to a voluntary blood test.

The accident is still under investigation by the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office.
