Coin contest aims to help graduation trips

GREENVILLE — Astera Credit Union is making the Aug. 24 rivalry football game between the Belding Redskins and Greenville Yellow Jackets just a little more competitive with its coin collection contest, going on now through Aug. 17.

Astera Credit Union has set out two canisters, each one representing a school, which people can vote by putting in money in either one. The one with the most money wins. Astera Credit Union will match the funds collected (up to $1,000 for each school) and donate the money to each school’s senior class graduation programs — Belding High School Project Graduation and Greenville Senior Mystery Trip.

Jenny Bennett, Greenville branch supervisor for Astera Credit Union, located inside of Wal-Mart, said the coin collection contest is a great way for the new business, which opened in April, to get involved in the community.

“Astera has four branches in Lansing and one in Ionia and, with the new branch here, they really wanted to get involved in the community,” Bennett said. “I told them that the Belding-Greenville football game is one the biggest fall events in the area so we found a way to get involved with it.”

Bennett said anyone, Astera Credit Union member or not, can vote.
