REMUS — Cross country season is officially underway after four local teams ran in the Early Season Warrior Invitational Tuesday at Chippewa Hills High School.
Central Moncalm, Greenville, Lakeview and Montabella each participated in the event.
Greenville’s boys were fifth out of eight teams in the Blue Division behind winner Cedar Springs.
Kyle Reamer led the Yellow Jackets with a 19:58, followed by Scott Scripter (20:01) and Chris Jacobsen (20:03).
“We have been stressing a pack-mentality attack as a team early on in the race and I think they pushed each other the last 1,000 meters,” said coach Eric Nichols.
Ryan Loiselle finished in 21:16, Tyler Tester 21:27, Jared Downing 21:30, Griffen Lampman 23:39 and Gabe Tower in 25:52.
“Tester and Tower each ran their first varsity race and will only get better,” Nichols said. “Loiselle, Downing and Lampman will be steady as well.”
The Greenville girls were fifth in the Blue Divison.
Greenville’s girls got a 24:09 from Madison Sorsen, a 24:16 from Ali Loding and a 24:59 from Julia Hansen. They finished fifth in the Blue Division also.
Central Montcalm’s boys were seventh out of nine teams in their division.
Tyler Sleet led the Green Hornets with a 17:57, while Preston Giles (21:36) and Cody Veltkamp (22:40) rounded out the top three.
“I thought Tyler ran really well this early in the season,” Central coach Shad Morgan said. “The other guys are new to running and they are not used to the intricacies of running.”
The Hornet girls were led by Scylar Blaisdell with a 29:16, Kaila Kosten with a 29:39 and Bethany Wheeler with a 31:02.
“With the girls the same type of deal,” Morgan said. “They are trying to find their pace. They had a lot left in the tank they could have used somewhere.”
Montabella finished sixth in the boys and fourth in the girls meet.
The Mustang boys were led by Parker Eldred’s 19:35. Christian Watson (19:54) and Kelton Eldred (19:55) rounded out the top three.
Austin Garner ran 21:31, Nick Moulter 21:24 and Dakoda Lobert 21:48.
Leading Montabella’s girls was Taylor Smith, who was second overall (20:53). Kensi Garvey (22:16) and Alyvia Karcher (24:52) were second and third on the team respectively. Garvey was 18th overall.
Kim Buskirk ran 26:58 and Sarah Miller 27:48.
Lakeview’s results were not made available.
“Chip Hills has a great cross country course and run a quality meet as usual,” Nichols said. “It was a good opener for all teams involved.”
Greenville is at the East Grand Rapids Pioneer Classic on Thursday. Central Montcalm and Lakeview are at the Belding Invitational Aug. 29, while Montabella doesn’t run until the Hornet Run on Sept. 9.
