MONTCALM TOWNSHIP — Sno-Motion 2012, which will take place at Nelson’s Speed Shop, located at 456 N. Greenville Road (M-91), begins Friday and lasts through Saturday.
Nelson’s Speed Shop suffered a destructive fire early the morning of June 22. About 75 firefighters from 11 fire departments responded to the blaze, which destroyed the business.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives investigated the fire, as Nelson’s had previously been the victim of arson on Sept. 17, 2001. However, the cause of this year’s fire remains undetermined.
Despite the fire and the complete loss of the business, Sno-Motion will go on.
Nelson’s Speed Shop owner Jack Nelson described the event as being how it was when it first started under tents.
This year, Nelson said he is adding monster trucks, drag races and more.
“It will be like the old-fashioned days,” Nelson said.
This weekend’s attractions include dozens of model snowmobiles and ATVs that will be on display Friday and Saturday, with opportunities to test drive many of the ATV vehicles.
Factory representatives will be on hand to answer questions about their new 2013 vehicle lineups and will also offer special sale pricing on accessories and gear.
A midway carnival area with food vendors will also be on site Friday and Saturday.
Saturday’s events will include tractor races, snow races on real snow, freestyle competitions and more.
The Great Lakes Vintage Grass Drag Championships begins at 11 a.m. Saturday. At 1 p.m., the Sno-Cross Races will begin, with snowmobile freestyle jumps and backflips occurring periodically throughout the show.
Saturday’s event will also feature a monster truck show, with monster truck rides available all-day.
Price of admission is $15 for adults. Children 12 and younger can enter for free for all events.
Gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
