LAKEVIEW — The Lakeview football team was given a win Friday when the Morley Stanwood Mohawks gave way the ball six times in a 24-8 win.
The Wildcats hope to continue the trend when they have their first home game of the season tonight against Holton. The Red Devils were 27-7 losers to Newaygo in their season opener.
Lakeview coach Guenther Mittelstaedt said practice has gone well so far this week.
“We had a good practice (Tuesday),” he said. “Monday we were just a little out of whack for some reason. (Tuesday) we were pretty sharp.”
Holton has some offensive weapons, Mittelstaedt noted.
“They (Holton) have a quarterback who is starting for his third season. He has quite a bit of experience,” he said. “They have a good fullback.”
Limiting those two is pretty much the defensive game plan, Mittelstaedt said.
“I think from the defensive side we need to put a lot of pressure on the quarterback,” he said. “We need to take away the inside rushing game and the passing game.”
Mittelstaedt wasn’t tipping his hand when it comes to the offense.
“We have to take advantage of some of the weaknesses on defense that we found on film,” he said, not elaborating.
The Wildcats forced the Mohawks into six turnovers Friday and that will be key again, Mittelstaedt said.
“I think turnovers will always be big and with our offense, ball possession, having control of the ball on offense a lot,” he said.
Mittelstaedt is expecting a high-scoring ball game.
“I think both teams are going to score a good bit,” he said.
The Wildcats lost to Holton a year ago 41-18. They defeated the Red Devils the three consecutive seasons prior.
A second straight win for the Lakeivew would be their first since the won three straight during the 2009 season.
Other games on the schedule around the area include Greenville at Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills, Lake Odessa Lakewood at Belding, Carson City-Crystal at Traverse City Christian, White Cloud at Central Montcalm and Montabella at Onekama. All are on tonight due to the Labor Day holiday weekend.
